The 2025 Belt & Road and BRICS Competition of Skills Development and Technology Innovation- Technology Innovation Domestic Finals were successfully held from March 14th to 16th at the BRICS Academy of Skills Development and Technology Innovation(Xiamen). This competition attracted nearly 900 participating projects from 29 provinces (including municipalities directly under the central government) across China. After expert evaluation, over 300 high-quality projects stood out and advanced to the intense competition of the domestic finals.


Opening Ceremony: Gathering Global Perspectives to Jointly Shape an Innovative Future

Over twenty domestic and international guests attended the opening ceremony either on-site or online, jointly witnessing the launch of the 2025 BRICS Technology Innovation Competition. On-site attendees included: Dr. Liu Zhenying, Chair of China Chapter of BRICS Business Council Skills Development, Applied Technology and Innovation Working Group and Executive Chairman of the BRICS Skills Development and Technology Innovation Competition Organizing Committee; Cao Weimin, Deputy Director of the Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Science and Technology; Hong Jun, Deputy Director of the Xiamen Municipal Education Bureau; Wu Zhiwei, Chief Engineer of the Xiamen Torch High-Tech Zone Management Committee; Lin Weiyi, Deputy District Chief of Xiamen’s Jimei District; Huang Rong, Deputy General Manager of Xiamen Information Group Co.,Ltd.; Xie Ming, Deputy Director of the Jimei District Bureau of Science, Technology, and Industry; Xie Guiting, Deputy Director of the Science and Technology Cooperation Division of the Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Science and Technology; Zhang Dianhui, Director of the Comprehensive Service Center of the China BRICS New Era Technology Innovation Incubation Park; and Lin Zhiqiang, Executive Director of the same center. Zhou Shuhua, Head of the BRICS Standardization (Zhejiang) Research Center, attended the ceremony as a special guest.

In addition, several international guests delivered speeches online, including Alina Doskanova, Chair of Russia Chapter of BRICS Business Council Skills Development, Applied Technology and Innovation Working Group; Maple Nkwanwa, Director of the Education and Training Authority at the South African Department of Higher Education and Training; Marcelo Vivaca, Head of the Latin American Office of the International Federation of Inventors' Associations; Mahdi Nazari, Technology and Innovation Counselor at the Consulate General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Guangzhou; Tri Mumpuni, Board Member of the National Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia; and Professor Omarkhan Manin, President of the World Skills Kazakhstan Academy. Together, they explored new opportunities for global scientific and technological cooperation.

图片18.pngIn the opening speech, Cao Weimin, Deputy Director of the Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Science and Technology, pointed out that innovation is the core driving force for high-quality development. In recent years, Xiamen has continuously optimized its innovation ecosystem, accelerated technological agglomeration, and achieved remarkable results in fields such as artificial intelligence, biomedicine, and new materials.

图片19.pngDr. Liu Zhenying, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the BRICS Competition of Skills Development and Technology Innovation Organizing Committee, delivered a keynote report titled "Designing Outcomes of BRICS+ Cooperation to Facilitate Chinese Enterprises and Vocational Education Going Global." He emphasized that the competition aims to promote exchanges and cooperation among nations in the fields of skills development and technology innovation, driving global progress and advancement in technological innovation. He expressed hope that participants could broaden their international perspectives, strengthen international exchanges and collaboration, and jointly explore new pathways and models for technological innovation, contributing wisdom and strength to the sustainable development of the Belt and Road Initiative and BRICS nations. Furthermore, efforts will continue to leverage the BRICS Standardization Working Committee for Skills and Technology as a foundation, with platforms such as the International Training Bases for BRICS Future Technical Skills and Humanities Exchange Talents(BRICS Workshop), the BRICS Auditorium of Skills Development and Technology Innovation, and the BRICS+ Alliance of Science and Technology Innovation. The Belt & Road and BRICS Competition of Skills Development and Technology Innovation will serve as a catalyst to advance skills development and technological innovation initiatives across the Belt and Road and BRICS regions.

Subsequently, representatives of the contestants and judges took oaths respectively, pledging to uphold the principles of fairness, impartiality, and transparency, to participate in the competition with full dedication, and to ensure the smooth progress of the event. Witnessed by over 400 contestants and judges on-site, the 2025 Belt & Road and BRICS Competition of Skills Development and Technology Innovation was officially launched.

图片24.pngThe domestic finals of this technology innovation competition feature ten major tracks, covering:  Advanced Manufacturing Track: Including digitalization and informatization of traditional equipment, as well as industrial applications of high-end equipment. 

Digital Healthcare Track: Encompassing intelligent medical devices, remote diagnosis and treatment, AI-assisted diagnosis, medical data management, and other directions.  

Green Energy Track: Spanning three major fields—new energy material innovation, green energy technology applications, and low-carbon circular economy.  

Artificial Intelligence Track: Featuring AIGC applications in cultural sectors, large-scale model deployment in visual quality inspection, and AI implementations in public welfare scenarios.  

Digital Agriculture Track: Centered on core challenges in BRICS agricultural development, targeting agricultural machinery such as seeders and fertilizer spreaders, as well as applications like pest control and farmland remote sensing monitoring. 

Other tracks include Virtual Simulation, Future Technologies, Sky & Space Communication Technology, Government & Public Management, End-to-End Solutions, and Talent Development, each focusing on vertical industries, deeply integrating engineering practices, and enabling full lifecycle management through multi-source data fusion. These tracks provide new paradigms for upgrading traditional manufacturing and support high-quality development in aerospace.  

The competing projects address industry pain points, align with future tech trends, and strive to solve real-world challenges through innovative technologies.

The competition scene was spectacular, with numerous contestants showcasing their project prototypes, fully demonstrating the exploratory spirit and creative vitality of Chinese youth in the field of technological innovation. Throughout the competition, all participating teams exhibited a high level of professionalism and innovative spirit. From the conceptualization of projects to their implementation, from the development and application of technologies to the presentation of results, each entry showcased outstanding technical proficiency, high practicality, and significant market potential, providing new ideas and directions for industry development.

The expert judges highly praised the outstanding performances of the contestants and expressed their expectations for the participants to further strengthen technological research and innovation efforts in the future. They emphasized the importance of focusing on refining product or service details, ensuring product stability and reliability, and conducting thorough research and analysis on user experience and market demands. This will help align their products more closely with market needs and development trends, particularly by considering the localization of technical parameters for BRICS countries to better serve these markets. Additionally, they highlighted the need to enhance the industry-academia-research collaboration mechanism, transitioning innovations from laboratories to enterprises, promoting deep integration of the innovation chain with the industrial chain, and accelerating the transformation and implementation of outstanding projects.

Closing Ceremony: Crowning Glory, Advancing Together on the International Stage

After two days of intense competition, the expert judging panel conducted a comprehensive evaluation based on multiple dimensions including technological foresight, implementation feasibility, social value, industrial potential, and team performance. The outstanding projects that ultimately emerged victorious will have the opportunity to represent China in international competitions held across six major regions: Brazil, Russia, South Africa, ASEAN, the Middle East, and East Asia. There, they will compete against top-tier technical teams from Belt and Road Initiative and BRICS countries.

This competition not only provides a stage for domestic innovative talents to showcase their abilities, but also further promotes in-depth cooperation among Belt and Road and BRICS countries in the fields of skill development and technological innovation. In the future, the competition will continue to leverage its platform advantages to facilitate international scientific and technological exchanges and collaborative development, injecting new momentum into the global innovation ecosystem.

Concurrent event: Standardization training program facilitates international cooperation

The event was held concurrently with the "BRICS Auditorium of Skills Development and Technology Innovation—BRICS Group Standards Formulation Training Course (Phase III) . The training curriculum covered the compilation methods, key review points, and case studies of international standards and group standards, aiming to enhance the capability of domestic experts in formulating BRICS group standards, support vocational education in going global, and empower enterprises in internationalization. International experts from Brazil, Russia, South Africa, Iran, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, and other countries were invited to participate in this event.

Volunteer Highlights: Youthful Strength, Silent Dedication

Twenty-five student volunteers from the School of Economics and Trade at Xiamen Xingcai Vocational and Technical College undertook various competition tasks, including participant registration, check-in, waiting area guidance, on-site competition assistance, and auxiliary hosting for opening and closing ceremonies. With their proactive, meticulous, and considerate teamwork spirit, they played a vital supporting role in ensuring the smooth and successful execution of this event.

Regarding the Competition

The BRICS Competition of Skills Development and Technology Innovation (referred to as the "BRICS Competition") is an international event endorsed by the 2017 BRICS Summit Preparatory Committee, filed with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, and approved by the BRICS Business Council. Since its inception in 2017, the competition has been successfully held eight times, attracting a cumulative participation of 450,000 individuals. It encompasses diverse activities such as contests, exhibitions, and technical exchanges. The BRICS Competition has become a vital platform for promoting scientific and technological collaboration, educational connectivity, and people-to-people exchanges among BRICS nations, providing extensive development opportunities for global skilled talents and technological innovators.
