From May 25 to 27, the Launch Ceremony of the 2024 Belt & Road and BRICS Competition of Skills Development and Technology Innovation – South Africa International Round was successfully held in Xiamen. The event was hosted by the Organizing Committee of the BRICS Competition of Skills Development and Technology Innovation and the International Alliance of Skills Development for Belt & Road and BRICS, and organized by the BRICS Academy of Skills Development and Technology Innovation (Xiamen).
To enhance the quality and standards of the South Africa International Round and accelerate the competition’s preparation, while further implementing the China–South Africa International Training Base for Future Technical Skills and Cultural Exchange, the organizing committee also aims to promote bilateral standard development and mutual recognition between China and South Africa, as well as organize activities such as the BRICS Auditorium of Skills Development and Technology Innovation, the BRICS competition, and technical exchange forums.
Distinguished guests including Mr. Zukile Mvalo, Deputy Director-General of the South African Department of Higher Education and Training, and Ms. Mapule Ncanywa, Chair of the South African Chapter of the BRICS Business Council Skills Development, Applied Technology and Innovation Working Group, were invited to the beautiful island city of Xiamen to jointly participate in the launch ceremony.
At the ceremony, Dr. Liu Zhenying — Chair of the China Chapter of the BRICS Business Council Skills Development, Applied Technology and Innovation Working Group, President of the International Alliance of Skills Development for Belt & Road and BRICS, Chair of the Organizing Committee of the BRICS Competition of Skills Development and Technology Innovation, and President of the BRICS Academy of Skills Development and Technology Innovation (Xiamen) — joined Mr. Zukile Mvalo, Ms. Mapule Ncanywa, Professor Mpilo Ngubane (Chief Learning Officer of Durban City College), Dr. Dovhani Mamphiswana (CEO of Ekurhuleni Artisans and Skills Training Centre), and Mr. Sanele Goodenough Makinane (Strategic Project Manager of the BRICS Business Council – South African Chapter and COO of the South African Science and Technology Centre) to jointly illuminate the launch screen, marking the official launch of the 2024 Belt & Road and BRICS Competition of Skills Development and Technology Innovation – South Africa International Round.
The South Africa International Round is scheduled to be held in August 2024 in South Africa. It will consist of two major segments: the Technology Innovation Competition and the Future Skills Challenge.
The Technology Innovation Competition will feature seven tracks:
l Advanced Manufacturing
l Digital Healthcare
l Green Energy
l Artificial Intelligence
l Virtual Simulation
l Digital Agriculture
l Future Technologies
The Future Skills Challenge, focusing on emerging industries and business models, will include 15 events such as:
l 3D Printing & Modeling Design
l Industrial Internet and Network Interconnection Technology
l Smart Agriculture Skills Innovation
The launch event also welcomed Professor Mpilo Ngubane, Chief Learning Officer of Durban City College and Executive Director of the UNITAR Global Training Center Network – Durban Office; Dr. Dovhani Mamphiswana, CEO of Ekurhuleni Artisans and Skills Training Centre; and Mr. Sanele Goodenough Makinane, Strategic Project Manager of the BRICS Business Council (South Africa) and COO of the South African Science and Technology Centre. Nearly 200 attendees from both China and South Africa participated in the event, including experts, competitors, mentors, and representatives from supporting enterprises.
During the same period, several parallel events were held at the BRICS Academy of Skills Development and Technology Innovation (Xiamen), including:
l the International Forum on Cross-border E-commerce under the BRICS Auditorium of Skills Development and Technology Innovation,
l the China–South Africa Cooperation Project Exchange Meeting,
l the Inaugural Meeting of the Social Services Committee of the International Alliance of Skills Development for Belt & Road and BRICS, and
l the Second Training Program on BRICS Technical and Skills Standardization for High-quality Standards Development.
