In June 2024, the Belt & Road and BRICS Skills Development International Alliance (IASDBR) organized a delegation from Chinese universities, enterprises, and research institutions to Brazil for the 2024 Belt & Road and BRICS Skills Development and Technology Innovation Competition – BRICS (Brazil) Technology Innovation Competition, and to promote international exchanges and cooperation in skills development and technology innovation. The exchange aimed to discuss the cooperation framework between Brazil’s National Service for Industrial Training (SENAI), the IASDBR, and its partners, and to strengthen skills development and innovative technologies in Brazil's green economy.
On June 24, the first day of the trip, the Chinese delegation was divided into four groups, each visiting São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina, and Mato Grosso States. The focus of the discussions revolved around topics such as "the partnership models and connections between Brazil and China in skills development, technological innovation, and industry." The delegation will participate in the 2024 Belt & Road and BRICS Skills Development and Technology Innovation Competition – BRICS (Brazil) Technology Innovation Competition in each state on June 26.
Santa Catarina State
In Santa Catarina, the Chinese delegation first visited the SENAI Manufacturing Systems and Laser Processing Innovation Research Institute, where they attended a lecture on “Infrastructure Innovation in Santa Catarina.” During this visit, the Chinese and Brazilian sides held a focused discussion on "Innovation Ecosystems: Interaction with the Industrial Sector."
In the afternoon, the delegation visited the institute’s laboratories to learn about the ongoing technological innovation and R&D efforts.
São Paulo State
The first stop for the Chinese delegation in São Paulo was the SENAI "Mariano Ferraz" School in São Paulo city. The Brazilian hosts warmly welcomed the delegation, with more than 20 supervisors and representatives from SENAI Brasília headquarters and various SENAI São Paulo branches in attendance. The representatives introduced SENAI, IASDBR, and the respective Chinese and Brazilian institutions, which helped enhance mutual understanding.
The Brazilian representatives provided a detailed overview of SENAI’s nationwide and regional presence, including its faculty, research teams, curriculum, and technical collaborations. They also highlighted SENAI’s significant contributions to vocational education, technological innovation, industry entrepreneurship, and the promotion of Brazil’s industrial development and social responsibility. In the discussion on green economy talent cultivation, they introduced SENAI’s comprehensive innovation ecosystem, which integrates SENAI, enterprises, academic institutions, and individuals to foster new technology development, innovative project cooperation, startup growth, and individual capacity building, thereby advancing industry progress.
After the meeting, accompanied by SENAI’s supervisors and representatives, the Chinese delegation visited key facilities at SENAI "Mariano Ferraz" School, including the automotive repair workshop, machining workshop, parts processing and production workshop, welding training area, medical services, and medical equipment repair station, gaining a deeper understanding of the school.
Rio de Janeiro State
In Rio de Janeiro, the Chinese delegation visited the headquarters of the Rio de Janeiro Federation of Industries (Firjan), where Mr. Carlos Magno Lucas do Nascimento, the General Manager of Business Relations, welcomed the delegation and introduced the SENAI institutions and related partner organizations. Both sides also presented their respective institutions, deepening mutual understanding.
Firjan serves as the representative for Rio de Janeiro at the municipal, state, and national levels in Brazil and is primarily responsible for promoting exchanges and conducting research and projects aimed at fostering sustainable development in the region.
In the afternoon, the delegation visited SENAI School in Jacarepaguá, where Mr. Edson Melo, Professional Education Manager at SENAI/RJ, introduced the school’s programs, student training models, curriculum development, and career guidance. He engaged in discussions with the delegation regarding the reform and development of vocational education. The group also toured the classrooms and training facilities.
Mato Grosso State
The Chinese delegation then traveled to the SENAI Food and Beverage Technology Institute (IST) in Mato Grosso. The head of the institute provided a detailed introduction to SENAI and IST, followed by a tour of the technology park and the SENAI Vocational Technical School.
