On the evening of November 4, the opening ceremony of the final of the 2022 BRICS Skills Competition was held in Xiamen. The opening ceremony of the finals was held in a combination of online and offline forms. Fang Jun, Deputy Director General of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges of the Ministry of Education, Huang Xiaozhou, Standing Committee Member of the Xiamen Municipal Party Committee, Deputy Mayor of Xiamen City and Director of the Municipal BRICS Office, Du Kewei, Head of the BRICS delegation and Director of the Center for Humanitarian Exchanges between China and Foreign Countries of the Ministry of Education, attended the ceremony and delivered speeches, while Liu Zhenying, Chairman of the Skills Development Working Group of the BRICS Business Council, hosted the opening ceremony. Mr. Lai Zuhui, Director of Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Human Resources and Social Affairs, Mr. Huang Feng, Executive Deputy Director of Xiamen BRICS Office, and Mr. Hong Jun, Deputy Director of Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Education were present at the event. Leaders from BRICS and other emerging markets and developing countries, and leaders of the BRICS Business Council Skills Development Working Group online remotely participated in the opening ceremony.
The competition received 3,585 international teams from Brazil, Russia, India, South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, Myanmar, Zimbabwe and other countries, as well as 6,282 domestic teams from 31 provinces in China, with a participation scale of nearly 20,000 people. After layers of selection and fierce competition, 1,691 teams and 2,491 players finally entered the final, including 728 foreign teams and 959 players and 963 domestic teams and 1,532 players.
Huang Xiaozhou, member of the Standing Committee of Xiamen Municipal Committee, Deputy Mayor and Director of the BRICS Office, firstly delivered a welcoming speech, in which he expressed his warm welcome to the guests, participating experts and competitors, and wished the competition a complete success. He said that 2022 is the BRICS "Year of China", and organizing the BRICS Vocational Skills Competition and the International Competition on Skills Development and Technological Innovation is an important achievement to further deepen the BRICS cooperation. More than 1,600 teams from BRICS and other countries will compete and learn from each other, which will promote exchanges and cooperation among vocational colleges and enterprises in BRICS countries, promote the cultivation of internationalized and high-quality skilled talents in BRICS countries, and help the construction of BRICS innovation bases.
Fang Jun, deputy director of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges of the Ministry of Education, said in his speech that the competition, which is benchmarked against major international competitions, has the following three features: first, it is an innovative model to boost the digital transformation and development of vocational education. Considering the digital transformation of education that countries around the world are experiencing, and combining the requirements of the new crown epidemic prevention and control, this competition actively utilizes digital technology and new media means, pioneering online and offline competitions and cloud viewing. Secondly, it is closely related to the era, focusing on the new industrial revolution and industrial development. Most of the competitions are set in the fields of Internet, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies, closely focusing on the demand for skill innovation in the context of the industrial revolution, and actively promoting the cultivation of skilled talents in the new era. Thirdly, the competition was organized to vigorously promote the integration of production, education and competition. During the same period, the competition also held activities such as talent docking sessions, striving to deepen the integration of industry and education through supporting activities to provide precise and efficient channels for industrial enterprises to build talent chains and innovation chains.
At the opening ceremony, the heads of the participating delegations of the BRICS countries from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa delivered speeches to express their gratitude and expectation for the competition and hoped that the competition would serve as an opportunity to strengthen international exchanges and cooperation, deepen the international integration of industry and education, and jointly promote the high-quality development of vocational education in the BRICS and other emerging markets and developing countries.
The 2022 BRICS Skills Competition Final is the largest vocational skills event held in Xiamen in recent years and benchmarked against international competitions. The competition is organized by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the BRICS Business Council and the Xiamen Municipal People's Government, hosted by the China Education Association for International Exchanges (CEAIE), the Ministry of Education's Center for the Development of Vocational Education (CDEV), the BRICS Business Council's Working Group on Skills Development, and hosted by the Xiamen BRICS Institute for Future Skills Development and Technology Innovation. The competition is divided into two phases: the Kick-off Competition and the Final Competition. The Kick-off Competition was successfully held in May this year in the form of a remotely distributed competition, and the Final Competition was held in the form of an online competition for foreign competitors and an offline competition for domestic competitors. The offline venue is located in Xiamen International Convention and Exhibition Center, which uses six exhibition halls and covers an area of nearly 40,000 square meters.
