November 7-8, 2024, the 41st Council and Committee Working Conference of the Asian Welding Federation (AWF) was successfully held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The conference was jointly organized by the Asian Welding Federation and the Malaysian Welding and Joining Society (MWJS), with over 40 representatives from welding societies and associations across China, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, the Philippines, Vietnam, Mongolia, and other countries in attendance.
Dr. Liu Zhenying, Vice President of the China Welding Association and President of the International Alliance of Skills Development for Belt & Road and BRICS, along with representatives from the China Building Material Machinery Association, attended this working conference.
According to the meeting agenda, the following meetings were convened in sequence: the 19th Audit Subcommittee Meeting, the 20th Documentation Subcommittee Meeting, the 20th Technical Expert Group Meeting, the 21st General Welder Certification Committee Meeting, the 9th Certification Committee Meeting, the 24th Standardization Committee Meeting, the 1st Standards Development Subcommittee Meeting, the 13th Welding Technology and Applications Committee Meeting, the 19th Website and Market Development Committee Meeting, the 13th IT Platform Subcommittee Meeting, the 2nd Education and Training Committee Meeting, the General Welder Certification (CWCS) Committee Meeting, and the 5th Membership Committee Meeting.
Mr. Satyender Mohan Mahajan, President of the Asian Welding Federation, delivered a speech, while Secretary-General Mr. Sze Thiam Siong presided over the meeting. Heads of various committees, subcommittees, and working groups reviewed the minutes of the previous meeting, summarized recent activities, and outlined future work plans.
Dr. Liu Zhenying, Vice President of the China Welding Association, chaired the working meetings of three committees in his capacity as Chairman of the Asian Welding Federation's Standards Development Subcommittee, Welding Technology and Application Committee, and Website & Market Development Committee.
At the 1st meeting of the Standards Development Subcommittee, Dr. Liu emphasized the significant role of standards development in unifying equipment technologies, enhancing product interoperability, and fostering talent cultivation in the welding field. He proposed initiating the development of standards for "Virtual Simulation Welding Technical Specifications," "Handheld Laser Welding Machine Technical Specifications," and "Welding Skills Competition Standards," while also soliciting new standards development directions from participants on-site. During this meeting, a new expert from Vietnam joined the subcommittee, bringing the total number of international experts to 20.
At the 13th Meeting of the Welding Technology and Applications Committee, Dr. Liu reviewed the history of the Asian Forum on Welding Technology and Applications, summarized the forum's achievements, and emphasized that the Asian Forum on Welding Technology and Applications has been successfully held for 17 consecutive sessions. It has become a significant event that brings together welding societies/associations, experts, and scholars from AWF member countries, effectively promoting advancements in Asian welding technology, sharing welding training and educational practices, and cultivating technical and skilled talents. Finally, Dr. Liu proposed to further elevate the Asian Forum on Welding Technology and Applications into a collaborative event jointly organized with the International Institute of Welding (IIW).
At the 19th Meeting of the Website and Market Development Committee, Dr. Liu highlighted the achievements of the Chinese and English websites of the Asian Welding Federation over the past year, including the publication of news, announcements, and information on major events and international conferences. He also proposed further optimizations in international user experience, the dissemination of welding-related information from various countries, and website marketing to enrich the content of the websites.
On November 8th, the 11th Executive Committee Meeting and the 41st AWF Council Meeting were convened. During the meetings, resolutions were passed: The ETC Chairman will formulate strategic objectives and action plans, lead discussions on innovative training, and provide guidelines for effective training; priority will be given to implementing multiple proposals such as applying virtual simulation welding and laser welding standards in education and training.
Finally, the meeting decided that the 42nd AWF Council and related meetings will be held in Mongolia in the first half of 2025, hosted by the Mongolian Welding Society; the 43rd AWF Council and related meetings will be held in China in the second half of 2025; and the 44th AWF Council and related meetings will be held in Thailand in the first half of 2026.
